Be familiar with a stepwise approach to treatment.

Start with 2 to 3 sprays of a topical vasoconstrictor, such as oxymetazoline, in the bleeding nostril. Also ask the patient to pinch their nose shut at the soft spot below the bridge for 10 to 15 minutes.
