Uncontrolled thyroid disease during pregnancy has risks...such as miscarriage, preterm birth, low birth weight, and cognitive defects.
Consider these tips to limit adverse fetal outcomes when these patients are admitted.
HYPOthyroidism. For newly pregnant patients, increase the maintenance levothyroxine by about 25% to 30% if it wasn't already done by the outpatient prescriber. Pregnant women need higher levothyroxine doses...because of faster drug metabolism, T4 transfer to the baby, etc.
