Brush Up on Tick Bites and Managing Lyme Disease
You’ll be asked about how to treat Lyme disease...as visits to the emergency department continue with tick season getting longer.
Post-bite prophylaxis. Consider one dose of doxycycline (200 mg for adults or 4.4 mg/kg for kids, up to 200 mg) if an Ixodes tick (deer, western) in a highly endemic area has been attached for at least 36 hr. The dose must be given within 72 hr of tick removal.
Some experts may consider prophylaxis if an Ixodes tick is attached for over 24 hr, but risk of transmission is very low before 36 hr.
