Take Special Precautions When Patients With Cirrhosis Undergo Surgery
You'll see more emphasis on perioperative care of cirrhosis patients...due to a higher risk of death and other surgical complications.
Coagulation. Cirrhosis patients walk a fine line between bleeding and clotting...because they have prothrombotic (clotting factors, platelets, etc) AND antithrombotic (protein C, etc) deficiencies.
Consider a thromboelastography (TEG) test, if available, to guide the need for a pre-op transfusion. TEG assesses clotting function and strength...and may help avoid fresh frozen plasma, platelets, etc.
