New or worsening ulcers are considered hospital-acquired conditions. Medicare won't pay for stage III or IV ulcers that occur in the hospital...and hospitals may be docked 1% in their TOTAL payments if they have high rates of hospital-acquired conditions.

Prevention. Identify patients at risk such as those who are nonambulatory...underweight...cognitively impaired...or incontinent.
