Don't Add the New Travelers' Diarrhea Med Rifamycin (Aemcolo) to Formulary
You'll be asked about the role of the new Rx rifamycin (Aemcolo, em-COH-loh) for adults who present with travelers' diarrhea.
Think of rifamycin as similar to rifaximin (Xifaxan). Both meds work locally in the intestines and are minimally absorbed.
But they're not first-line for travelers' diarrhea...and are only effective against noninvasive E. coli strains that don't cause fever or bloody stools.
