Be Prepared to Treat Patients With Altitude Illness
Winter may bring more patients to the emergency department needing treatment for altitude illness.
Altitude illness occurs in about 25% of patients traveling to elevations over 8,000 feet...the height of many Colorado ski resorts. But it can also occur at lower elevations.
Acute mountain sickness is the most common form. These patients have mild symptoms, such as headache, nausea, or fatigue.
