Avoid Even One Dose of Fluconazole in Pregnant Women

New warnings will raise concerns about a possible increased risk of miscarriage with ONE dose of fluconazole (Diflucan, etc).

We know to avoid fluconazole when treating pregnant women with invasive candidiasis, since labeling warns about birth defects with LONG-term use of HIGH-dose fluconazole... 400 to 800 mg/day.

But current labeling is less clear about the risks with a single fluconazole 150 mg dose during pregnancy. This is why you may see it prescribed in pregnant women with vaginal candidiasis...even though vaginal azoles (clotrimazole, etc) are first-line.
